Amis grad­u­at­ed from Van­der­bilt Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1878, and that same year joined the Ten­nes­see Con­fer­ence of the Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church, South. He filled ma­ny ap­point­ments, and was serv­ing as pas­tor in Pu­las­ki, Ten­nes­see, at the time of his death.
