Died: De­cem­ber 17, 1811, Bris­tol, Eng­land.

Buried: The site of the Mo­ra­vi­an church John An­tes at­ten­ded, and its ad­join­ing bur­i­al ground, were re­de­vel­oped some years ago. The build­ing itself dis­ap­peared long be­fore that. The lo­ca­tion of An­tes’ bo­dy is known on­ly to God.

Antes was a Mo­rav­i­an min­is­ter and miss­ion­ary, a watch­mak­er by pro­fess­ion. In 1764, he was called to serv­ice at Herrn­hut, Sach­sen (Sax­o­ny), in­ter­na­tion­al head­quar­ters of the Mo­ra­vi­ans. He was or­dained in 1769, and spent the next 12 years in Egypt as the first Amer­i­can miss­ion­ary there. In 1781, he left for two years in Ger­ma­ny be­fore set­tling in Ful­neck, Eng­land.
