Antoniano at­tend­ed the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Fer­ra­ra (Doc­tor of Laws 1556) and be­came a pro­fess­or of class­ic­al lit­er­a­ture there. In 1563, he be­came pro­fess­or of belles-lettres at Sa­pi­en­za Un­i­ver­si­ty. Three years lat­er, he gave up his seat there and be­gan stu­dy­ing the­ol­o­gy un­der Phil­ip Neri. He was or­dained a Cath­o­lic priest in 1568, be­came Sec­re­tary of Pa­pal Briefs in 1593, and car­din­al in 1599. His works in­clude:
