Antoniano attended the University of Ferrara (Doctor of Laws 1556) and became a professor of classical literature there. In 1563, he became professor of belles-lettres at Sapienza University. Three years later, he gave up his seat there and began studying theology under Philip Neri. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1568, became Secretary of Papal Briefs in 1593, and cardinal in 1599.
