Backstrom’s family emigrated to America in 1907, and joined the Swedish Pilgrim Church (Covenant) in Brooklyn, New York. Backstrom worked at the Chase National Bank for four years after high school, then studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and finally graduated from the North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, in 1926. He did graduate work at the University of Chicago, and became an ordained minister in 1928. He served Mission Covenant congregations in Lincoln, Nebraska; Lanyon, Iowa; and Youngstown, Ohio. He transferred to the Presbyterian denomination in 1948, and eventually retired in Chautauqua, New York.
