Backstrom’s fam­i­ly em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1907, and joined the Swed­ish Pil­grim Church (Co­ve­nant) in Brook­lyn, New York. Back­strom worked at the Chase Na­tion­al Bank for four years af­ter high school, then stu­died at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Penn­syl­van­ia, and fin­al­ly grad­u­at­ed from the North Park The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, in 1926. He did grad­u­ate work at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Chi­ca­go, and be­came an or­dained min­is­ter in 1928. He served Miss­ion Co­ve­nant con­gre­ga­tions in Lin­coln, Ne­bras­ka; Lan­yon, Io­wa; and Youngs­town, Ohio. He trans­ferred to the Pres­by­ter­i­an de­nom­in­a­tion in 1948, and event­u­al­ly re­tired in Chau­tau­qua, New York.
