Son of James Bak­er, Chan­cel­lor of the Di­o­cese of Dur­ham, Henry was ed­u­cat­ed at Win­ches­ter, Cooper’s Hill, and Ex­e­ter Coll­ege, Ox­ford (BMus 1867). He worked as a ci­vil en­gin­eer, es­pe­cial­ly in build­ing rail­roads in In­dia. He is some­times confused with Hen­ry Will­iams Bak­er (1821-1877).
