Barton was for some time min­is­ter at St. Mar­tin’s, Lei­ces­ter. He com­piled one of the ear­li­est col­lect­ions of Eng­lish lang­uage hymns (as dis­tinct from psal­ters). A friend of Ri­chard Bax­ter, he com­piled, at Bax­ter’s re­quest, four me­tri­cal ren­deri­ngs of the Te De­um. His other works in­clude:
