Son of Henry Humphrey Bell, Charles was educated at the Royal Academy, Edinburgh, Scotland; the Royal School, Dungannon; and Trinity College, Dublin (BA 1842, MA 1852, DD 1878). After taking Holy Orders, he was successively Curate of Hampton in Arden; St. Mary’s Chapel’s, Reading; and St. Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings (1846). He then served as Incumbent of St. John’s Chapel, Hampstead (1854); Vicar of Ambleside (1861); with Rydal, 1872; and Rector Cheltenham (1872). In 1869, he was also as Hon. Canon of Carlisle Cathedral. His works include:
