Son of Henry Humphrey Bell, Charles was ed­u­cat­ed at the Royal Academy, Ed­in­burgh, Scot­land; the Royal School, Dungannon; and Trin­i­ty Coll­ege, Dub­lin (BA 1842, MA 1852, DD 1878). After taking Ho­ly Orders, he was successively Cur­ate of Hampton in Arden; St. Mary’s Cha­pel’s, Reading; and St. Mary-in-the-Castle, Hastings (1846). He then served as Incumbent of St. John’s Cha­pel, Hampstead (1854); Vi­car of Ambleside (1861); with Rydal, 1872; and Rec­tor Cheltenham (1872). In 1869, he was al­so as Hon. Canon of Carlisle Ca­thed­ral. His works in­clude:
