A pi­an­ist, com­pos­er, and con­duct­or, Ben­nett taught mu­sic at Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty, and was a prin­ci­pal of the Roy­al So­ci­e­ty. In 1863, he helped ed­it The Chor­ale Book for Eng­land, by Catherine Winkworth. Queen Vic­tor­ia knight­ed him in 1871.
