Blackie was ed­u­cat­ed at Mar­is­chal Coll­ege, Aber­deen, Scot­land, and the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh. Af­ter stu­dy­ing in Göt­tin­gen, Ber­lin, and Rome, Blackie be­came a law­yer in 1834. In 1839, he be­came Pro­fess­or of Hu­man­i­ty at Mar­isch­al Coll­ege, Ab­er­deen, and in 1841, Pro­fess­or of La­tin at Mar­is­chal, and in 1850 Pro­fess­or of Greek at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh.
