Blacklock stu­died at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh, and was li­censed to preach in 1739. In 1762, he was or­dained par­ish min­is­ter of Kirk­cud­bright, but due to blind­ness had to re­sign and re­tire on an an­nu­i­ty. He went to Ed­in­burgh and there re­ceived as board­ers un­i­ver­si­ty stu­dents and boys at­tend­ing school. In 1767, he re­ceived a D.D. de­gree from Mar­isch­al Coll­ege, Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ab­er­deen. Black­lock was one of the ear­li­est lit­er­ary friends of po­et Rob­ert Burns.
