Bode attended Eton, the Charter House, and Christ Church, Oxford University, where he won the Hertford Scholarship in 1835, and graduated with his B.A. in 1837 (followed by his M.A.). He took Holy Orders in 1841; became rector of Westwell, Oxfordshire, in 1847; then of Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire, in 1860. He delivered his Bampton Lectures in 1855, and was for a time tutor and Classical Examiner at his college. His works include:
