After grad­u­at­ing in 1883 from the Prep­ar­a­to­ry School of North­west­ern Un­i­ver­si­ty, Ev­ans­ton, Il­li­nois, Bol­ton worked as a cor­res­pond­ent for the Chi­ca­go Dai­ly In­ter-Ocean (pre­de­cess­or to the Chi­ca­go Trib­une). She joined the Sev­enth-day Ad­vent­ist de­nom­in­a­tion in 1885, and served an as­sist­ant to Ell­en G. White (1887-90). Her works in­clude:
