After em­i­grat­ing to Amer­i­ca, Bot­tome be­came a Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal min­is­ter in 1850. Dick­in­son Coll­ege in Car­lisle, Penn­syl­van­ia, award­ed him an hon­o­ra­ry Doc­tor of Di­vin­i­ty de­gree in 1872. His works in­clude:
