A graduate of Harvard University (BA, Phi Beta Kappa, 1904; MA 1905), Bowie received a BD degree from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1908. In 1909, he was ordained an Episcopal priest. He served as a hospital chaplain in France in World War I, and in 1939, became Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary. His works include:
