A grad­u­ate of Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA, Phi Be­ta Kap­pa, 1904; MA 1905), Bow­ie re­ceived a BD de­gree from the Vir­gin­ia The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary in 1908. In 1909, he was or­dained an Epis­co­pal priest. He served as a hos­pi­tal chap­lain in France in World War I, and in 1939, be­came Pro­fes­sor of Prac­ti­cal The­ol­o­gy at Un­ion The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­ary. His works in­clude:

Historical Note: While at Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty, Bow­ie co-ed­it­ed the Crim­son mag­a­zine with fu­ture Amer­i­can pre­si­dent Frank­lin Del­a­no Roos­e­velt.
