Though born in Indiana, Alice spent most of her life in Ohio. She at­tend­ed the St. Louis Eliot Gram­mar School, and Wood­ward High School in Cin­cin­na­ti. In 1876, she mar­ried William Er­nest Bro­ther­ton of Cin­cin­na­ti. She was mo­ther to two boys and a girl, but the old­er son died in 1900. She con­trib­ut­ed prose and verse to per­i­od­ic­als such as The Cen­tu­ry, The At­lan­tic and The In­de­pen­dent. She be­longed to the Un­i­tar­ian de­nom­in­at­ion. Her works in­clude:
