Buck at­tend­ed the Mer­chant Tay­lors’ School, Guild­hall School of Mu­sic, Roy­al Coll­ege of Mu­sic, and Wor­ces­ter Coll­ege, Ox­ford (BA 1891, MA 1894, MusD 1897). He served as Mu­sic Mas­ter of Rug­by School (1894); or­gan­ist at Wells Ca­thed­ral (1896); Mu­sic Mas­ter, Har­row School (1901-27); Pro­fess­or of Mu­sic, Dub­lin Un­i­ver­si­ty (1910-20); and Pro­fess­or of Mu­sic, Lon­don Un­i­ver­si­ty (1925-30).
