A stu­dent of or­gan­ist Wil­liam Hors­ley, Bur­rowes lived in Lon­don near­ly 40 years, and played the or­gan at the Church of St. James, West­min­ster. He helped found the Phil­har­mon­ic So­ci­e­ty, and wrote an over­ture used as the con­clud­ing item at the So­ci­e­ty’s con­certs. He al­so com­posed pi­a­no pieces, and his “Sin­gle Chant in E” was in­clud­ed in Ca­thed­ral Psal­ter Chants (1875). His other works in­clude:
