John Cosin (1594-1672)

Born: No­vem­ber 30, 1594, Nor­wich, Eng­land.

Died: Jan­u­a­ry 15, 1672, West­min­ster, Eng­land.

Buried: In the cha­pel ded­i­cat­ed to St. Pe­ter, which Co­sin him­self erect­ed and con­se­crat­ed, at Auck­land Cas­tle, in Bi­shop Auck­land, Dur­ham, Eng­land.

Cosin was ed­u­cat­ed at the Free School in Nor­wich. Upon tak­ing Ho­ly Or­ders, he be­came Pre­ben­da­ry of Dur­ham Ca­thed­ral; Rec­tor of Bran­ce­peth, 1626; Mas­ter of Pe­der­house, Cam­bridge, 1634; and Vice Chan­cel­lor of the Un­i­ver­si­ty and Dean of Pe­ter­bo­rough, 1640. He suf­fered much at the hands of the Pur­i­tans, but af­ter the Res­tor­a­tion in 1660, be­came Dean, then Bi­shop, of Dur­ham.
