Ellen was the young­est sis­ter of rail­road mag­nate Col­lis P. Hunt­ing­ton. Af­ter mar­ria­ge, she lived in Eliz­a­beth, New Jer­sey. Fol­low­ing the death of her hus­band Ed­win Isaac Gates, she moved to New York Ci­ty, where she lived the rest of her life. Her works in­clude:
