Gilman graduated from Harvard College in 1811, and was a tutor there from 1817 to 1819. In 1819, he became pastor of a Unitarian congregation in Charlestown, South Carolina, where he stayed until his death. He made contributions to the Christian Examiner, the North American Review, and the Southern Quarterly, and also wrote:
