Harkness at­tend­ed Cor­nell Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA 1912) and Bos­ton Un­i­ver­si­ty (MA 1920, MRE 1920, PhD 1923), and did post-grad­u­ate work at Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty, Yale Un­i­ver­si­ty, and Un­ion The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­a­ry in New York. She was Pro­fess­or of Ap­plied The­ol­o­gy, El­mi­ra Coll­ege, New York (1923-37); a teach­er at Mount Ho­ly­oke Coll­ege, South Had­ley, Mass­a­chu­setts, for two years; Pro­fess­or of Ap­plied The­ol­o­gy, Gar­rett The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­a­ry (1939-1950); and Pro­fess­or of Ap­plied The­ol­o­gy at the Pa­ci­fic School of Re­li­gion, Ber­ke­ley, Cal­i­for­nia (1950-1961). She al­so taught in the Phil­ip­pines and Ja­pan, and was ac­tive in the Meth­od­ist Com­mis­sion on World Peace and the World Coun­cil of Church­es. Her works in­clude:
