Hiles was ed­u­cat­ed at Ox­ford (BMus 1862, DMus 1867). He played the or­gan at Bury (1846), held sev­er­al other posts, then went to St. Paul’s, Hulme (1864-7). He was a lec­tur­er at Owen’s Coll­ege in Man­ches­ter (1867), and Pro­fess­or at the Man­ches­ter Coll­ege of Mu­sic (1893). His works in­clude:
