Hiles was educated at Oxford (BMus 1862, DMus 1867). He played the organ at Bury (1846), held several other posts, then went to St. Paul’s, Hulme (1864-7). He was a lecturer at Owen’s College in Manchester (1867), and Professor at the Manchester College of Music (1893). His works include:
