Mackay grad­u­at­ed from the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh and ini­tial­ly worked as a doc­tor. How­ev­er, he was or­dained, and in 1868 be­came pas­tor of the Pro­spect Street Pres­by­ter­ian Church in Hull.
