Messiter em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1863, and sang in the choir at Trin­i­ty Church in New York Ci­ty. He lat­er played the or­gan in Poult­ney, Ver­mont; Phil­a­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia; and at Trin­i­ty Church, New York Ci­ty (1866), where he served 31 years. His works in­clude:
