May was the daughter of hymnist Daniel Whittle, and wife of William R. Moody (son of 19th Century evangelist Dwight Moody). She attended Dwight Moody’s Girl’s School in Northfield, Massachusetts; Oberlin College (1888-1889); and the Royal Academy of Music in London (1890-1891). A gifted singer, she assisted her father and Dwight Moody in their evangelism efforts, and co-edited (with Charles M. Alexander) Northfield Hymnal No. 3.
