After a prodigal youth, Müller came to Christ around age 20, and studied theology at the University of Halle. One of his first pastorates was in Teignmouth, Devonshire. In 1832, he moved to Bristol, where he founded the Scriptural Knowledge Institution two years later, and became well known for running orphanages. In the last two decades of his life he made evangelistic trips to America, India, Japan, and Australia.
