Nicholson em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca around age 25. He lived in Phil­a­del­phia, Penn­syl­van­ia, for al­most two de­cades, and was a mem­ber of the Whar­ton Street Meth­od­ist Epis­co­pal Church (Will­iam Kirk­pat­rick was there at the same time). Around 1871, he moved to Wash­ing­ton, DC, and worked as a clerk in the Post Of­fice De­part­ment.
