Oakeley at­tend­ed Rug­by and Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty, then went on to stu­dy in Leip­zig, Dres­den, and Bonn, Ger­ma­ny. He taught at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh, Scot­land (Reid Chair of Mu­sic) from 1865 to 1891. Arch­bi­shop Tait gave him a doc­tor­ate of mu­sic at Can­ter­bu­ry in 1871; he re­ceived his knight­hood in 1876, and five years lat­er be­came Com­pos­er of Mu­sic to Queen Vic­tor­ia in Scot­land. Among his bet­ter known works is Suite in the Olden Style op. 27 (1893).
