Oliver at­tend­ed the Bos­ton La­tin School, Phill­ips An­do­ver Acad­e­my, Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty, and Dart­mouth (grad­u­at­ing in 1818). He was a church or­gan­ist for 36 years, and taught school for 24. He al­so served as may­or of Sa­lem and Law­rence, Mass­a­chu­setts, Ad­ju­tant Gen­er­al of Mass­a­chu­setts, and as Mass­a­chu­setts State Trea­sur­er (1861-1865). He re­ceived an hon­o­rary mu­sic de­gree from Har­vard in 1862, and from Dart­mouth in 1883. His works in­clude:
