Roberts start­ed out as an ap­prent­ice car­pent­er with Jenk­ins and Jones, but soon de­cid­ed his gifts lay in the mu­sic­al field. He grad­u­at­ed in mu­sic in 1905, and be­came the young­est Welsh­man to earn a Doctor of Music degree from Oxford University. He per­formed through­out Wales as a con­duct­or, judge, and or­gan­ist. He was the Di­rect­or of Mu­sic at UCNW, Bangor, until 1920, and played the or­gan at Beth­le­hem, Rhos.
