Sanders re­ceived his mu­sic­al train­ing at the Bush Con­ser­va­to­ry, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois, and the Amer­i­can Aca­de­my, Rome, It­a­ly. Around 1933, he began play­ing the or­gan and con­duct­ing in Chicago. In 1938, he be­came dean of Indiana Un­i­ver­si­ty’s School of Mu­sic; in 1954 he moved to the music de­part­ment at Brook­lyn Coll­ege. He served on the com­mit­tee that pro­duced the Un­i­tar­i­an-Un­i­ver­sal­ist Hymns of the Spir­it (1937) and Hymns for the Cel­e­bra­tion of Life (1964).
