Sanders received his musical training at the Bush Conservatory, Chicago, Illinois, and the American Academy, Rome, Italy. Around 1933, he began playing the organ and conducting in Chicago. In 1938, he became dean of Indiana University’s School of Music; in 1954 he moved to the music department at Brooklyn College. He served on the committee that produced the Unitarian-Universalist Hymns of the Spirit (1937) and Hymns for the Celebration of Life (1964).
