Shrubsole was a chor­ister at Can­ter­bu­ry Ca­thed­ral, and in 1784 be­came or­gan­ist at Spa­fields Cha­pel, Lon­don, where he re­mained unt­il his death. Ac­cord­ing to , he is a dif­fer­ent man from Will­iam Shrub­sole the hymn­ist.
