Son of an Ar­my of­fi­cer, Tur­ton was ed­u­cat­ed at Clif­ton Coll­ege, Eng­land, and the Roy­al Mil­i­ta­ry Acad­e­my. He was com­mis­sioned in 1876 as a Roy­al En­gin­eer lieu­ten­ant, and re­tired in 1905. His works in­clude:
