Walter stu­died mu­sic un­der Edward Hodges, and played the or­gan at the Church of the Epi­pha­ny; St. John’s Cha­pel; St. Paul’s Cha­pel; and Trin­i­ty Cha­pel, New York Ci­ty. He re­ceived an hon­or­ary Doc­tor of Mu­sic de­gree from Co­lum­bia Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1864. His works in­clude:
