Whiting was ed­u­cat­ed in Chap­ham and at King Al­fred’s Coll­ege, Win­ches­ter. Be­cause of his mu­sic­al abil­i­ty, he be­came mas­ter of Win­ches­ter Coll­ege Chor­is­ters’ School in 1842, and worked in that ca­pa­ci­ty for 36 years. He wrote vol­umes of po­et­ry, and con­trib­ut­ed hymns to other col­lect­ions. His works in­clude:
