Born: Ap­ril 25, 1926, Ham­il­ton, Ohio.

Young at­tend­ed the Cin­cin­na­ti (Ohio) Coll­ege-Con­ser­va­to­ry of Music (BME), Bos­ton Un­i­ver­si­ty School of The­ol­o­gy (STB), and Ohio North­ern Un­i­ver­si­ty (DMus 1969). He al­so stu­died at Un­ion The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry, New York, and in Vi­en­na and Prague. He served on the fa­cul­ties and di­rect­ed grad­u­ate stu­dies in church mu­sic at the Per­kins School of The­ol­o­gy, South­ern Meth­od­ist Un­i­ver­si­ty, and Scar­ritt Coll­ege, and was emer­i­tus pro­fess­or of church mu­sic at Can­dler School of The­ology, Em­o­ry Un­i­ver­si­ty. He al­so served as chor­al di­rect­or and lec­turer in mu­sic at Graz Un­i­ver­si­ty, Aus­tria (1969-72), and di­rect­ed the Unit­ed Meth­odist Youth Chor­ale (1980-90) in con­cert tours of Eng­land, Wales, France, Switz­er­land, Aus­tria, and Ger­ma­ny.
