Farmer composed oratorios, cantatas, church music, chamber music and many school songs, especially for Harrow, where he was music master for many years. One of his best known secular compositions is “Forty Years On,” which he wrote at Harrow in 1872. Farmer also played the organ at Balliol College, Oxford, and founded the Balliol Concerts.
