Son of a Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter, Prout was a schol­ar and ed­it­or. Ed­u­cat­ed at Lon­don Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA 1854), he taught at the Na­tion­al Train­ing School for Mu­sic (1876-1882), the Roy­al Acad­e­my of Mu­sic (1879-1909), and Trin­i­ty Coll­ege, Dub­lin (1894). He ed­it­ed the Month­ly Mu­sic­al Re­view (1871-1875), and was a mu­sic cri­tic for The Acad­e­my (1874-79) and The Athen­ae­um (1879-89). He com­posed a num­ber of can­ta­tas, an or­gan con­cer­to, sym­pho­nies, and church mu­sic.
