Born: Jan­u­a­ry 20, 1586, Grün­hain, Sach­sen (Sax­o­ny).

Died: No­vem­ber 19, 1630, Leip­zig, Ger­ma­ny.

Son of a min­is­ter and teach­er, Schein moved with his fam­i­ly to Dres­den at age sev­en when his fa­ther died. With­in six years, he was sing­ing in the Dres­den court choir and stu­dy­ing un­der its Ka­pell­meis­ter. He went on to stu­dy at the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Leip­zig (1603), the Schup­for­ta near Naum­burg, and fin­al­ly back at the Un­i­versity of Leip­zig around 1607. Due to his dem­on­strat­ed abil­i­ties, by 1615 he be­came the Ka­pell­meis­ter at Wei­mar. In 1615, he was ap­point­ed cant­or at St. Thom­as Church in Leip­zig, pre­ced­ing Bach there by more than a cen­tury.
