Young attended the Cincinnati (Ohio) College-Conservatory of Music (BME), Boston University School of Theology (STB), and Ohio Northern University (DMus 1969). He also studied at Union Theological Seminary, New York, and in Vienna and Prague. He served on the faculties and directed graduate studies in church music at the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, and Scarritt College, and was emeritus professor of church music at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He also served as choral director and lecturer in music at Graz University, Austria (1969-72), and directed the United Methodist Youth Chorale (1980-90) in concert tours of England, Wales, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
