Educated at Glas­gow Un­i­ver­si­ty, Kel­ly stu­died the­ol­o­gy at Bonn (1852-4); New Coll­ege, Ed­in­burgh (1856-67); and the The­o­lo­gic­al Coll­ege of the Eng­lish Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in Lon­don. He served con­gre­ga­tions in Heb­burn-on-Tyne and Streat­ham, and as of 1887 was Tract Ed­it­or of the Re­li­gious Tract So­ci­e­ty. His works in­clude:
