Brother of John Hop­kins, Ed­ward be­gan his mu­sic­al ca­reer by sing­ing in the choir at the Cha­pel Roy­al. He lat­er played the or­gan at Mitch­am, Sur­rey; St. Peter’s, Is­ling­ton; and St. Luke’s, Ber­wick Street. In 1843, he be­came or­gan­ist at Tem­ple Church in Lon­don, where he played over half a cen­tu­ry. In 1882, the Arch­bi­shop of Can­ter­bu­ry award­ed him an hon­o­rary Doc­tor of Mu­sic.
