Hopkins was a chorister at St. Paul’s Cathedral (1831-38). He was organist at Mitcham parish Church (1838, succeeding his brother Edward); St. Stephen’s, Islington (1839); Trinity Church, Islington (1843); St. Mark’s, Jersey (1845); St. Michael’s, Chester Square (1846); and Rochester Cathedral (1856-1900).
