Born: Ju­ly 10, 1799, Leith­mont (near Leith), Lo­thi­an, Scot­land.

Died: Jan­u­ary 19, 1873.

Baptist was the young­er son of Sir Ger­ard Noel, bro­ther of the Earl of Gains­bo­rough, and un­cle of Car­o­line No­el. He was ed­u­cat­ed at Trin­i­ty Coll­ege, Cam­bridge. Tak­ing Ho­ly Or­ders, he was for some time In­cum­bent of St. John’s Epis­co­pal Cha­pel, Bed­ford Row, Lon­don, and Chap­lain to Queen Vic­tor­ia. In 1848, he left the Church of Eng­land and sub­se­quent­ly be­came a Baptist min­is­ter. He was pas­tor of St. John’s Street Cha­pel, Bed­ford Row, un­til 1868. His prose efforts, about a do­zen in all, were pub­lished be­tween 1847 and 1863. His works in­clude:

• A Selection of Psalms and Hymns Adapt­ed Chief­ly for Con­gre­ga­tion­al Use and So­cial Wor­ship, 1832, 1838, 1848, 1853, etc.
• Essay on the Union of Church and State (New York: Har­per and Bro­thers, 1849)
• Freedom and Slavery in the Unit­ed States of Amer­i­ca (Lon­don: James Nes­bet & Co., 1863)
• The Unity of the Church, Ano­ther Tract for the Times, Ad­dressed Es­pe­cial­ly to Mem­bers of the Es­tab­lish­ment, Re­print­ed at the Re­quest of the Miss­ion­ar­ies of All De­nom­in­a­tions in Cal­cut­ta (Syd­ney, Aus­tral­ia: Stath­am and For­ster, “Aus­tral­i­an” Of­fice, 1846)
