Born: July 10, 1799, Leithmont (near Leith), Lothian, Scotland.
Died: January 19, 1873.
Baptist was the younger son of Sir Gerard Noel, brother of the Earl of Gainsborough, and uncle of Caroline Noel. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Taking Holy Orders, he was for some time Incumbent of St. John’s Episcopal Chapel, Bedford Row, London, and Chaplain to Queen Victoria. In 1848, he left the Church of England and subsequently became a Baptist minister. He was pastor of St. John’s Street Chapel, Bedford Row, until 1868. His prose efforts, about a dozen in all, were published between 1847 and 1863. His works include:
- A Selection of Psalms and Hymns Adapted Chiefly for Congregational Use and Social Worship, 1832, 1838, 1848, 1853, etc.
- Essay on the Union of Church and State (New York: Harper and Brothers, 1849)
- Freedom and Slavery in the United States of America (London: James Nesbet & Co., 1863)
