Roberts started out as an apprentice carpenter with Jenkins and Jones, but soon decided his gifts lay in the musical field. He graduated in music in 1905, and became the youngest Welshman to earn a Doctor of Music degree from Oxford University. He performed throughout Wales as a conductor, judge, and organist. He was the Director of Music at UCNW, Bangor, until 1920, and played the organ at Bethlehem, Rhos.
