Son of a priest, Landstad was ordained in 1827, and serving parishes in Gausdal (1828), Kviteseid (1834), Seljord (1839), Fredrikshald (1848), Borgesyssel (1854), and Sandeherred (1859). He retired in 1877 and moved to Kristiania (Oslo). He is probably best remembered for his work on a hymnal for the Lutheran Church of Norway, Udkast til Kirkesalmebog, known as “Landstad’s hymnal” (1869). His other works include:
